This post is on the August BirchBox Man Box. Now for those who are not familiar with BirchBox Man, it is a monthly subscription service that delivers a box of grooming and lifestyle products for $20 per month to a customer’s doorstep. It typically includes four to five picks per month with samples like high-end shave gel, deodorant and skincare products from brands like Billy Jealousy, Costume National, Kérastase and Kiehl’s. Then there are lifestyle products that might include headphones or socks. This is actually my fourth box and let me just give you a quick run down of my experiences with the first three. The first box was the bomb.com it featured a pair of bright colored mens dress socks from the Brand Richer Poorer Socks which retail at $12 a pair, a nice sized sample of the Kiehl's exfoliating soap bar, a nice sized sample of Bill Jealousy liquid sand exfoliating face cleanser, and some other things I have already forgotten about. Boxes 2 and 3 fell very short compared to my first box I received playing cards, bacon popcorn (I am a vegetarian so this was a big fat FAIL), and some headphone wrap things which I would have never purchased with my own money. I don't believe boxes 2 and 3 were worth $5 let alone $20. Box 4 which is this August Box was going to be my determining factor on whether or not I would cancel the service or continue with the monthly subscription. Without further rambling lets go ahead and get into the box.
Okay you got me, the box came a little better packaged then this but in my angst to see what was in it I took a sneak peak.
So here is what I received in my August BirchBox Man:
1.Bloody Orange Body Bar by Jock Soap
I will say that the bar is a nice smelling soap bar. The bar contains pure glycerin and sorbitol that wash away impurities without drying skin out (this is the wonderful discription BirchBox provided<---Honestly its just a bar of soap). Coconut, palm, and safflower oils condition and moisturize while antioxidant-packed soybean protein improves skin’s strength and texture. Honestly its a nice bar of soap that doesn't leave the skin with that residue that can feel sticky and the smell is nice and fresh. One thing to note is that the sample isn't that big. I purchases the full size bar a couple of weeks before my August box arrived because the reviews on the soap were good the sample is 1.7 fl. oz. while the full size is 8 fl. oz. The bar retails for $8 so Birchbox could have given a full size bar instead of the inferior sized one that was in the box. Value = $1.70
2. Kiehls Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream and 3. Klorane Shampoo
Lets start of with the Kiehl's shave cream a full size is 5 fl.oz. for $16 and the sample that was provide is 0.5 fl. oz. so the sample is worth $1.60. I am not one to use shave creams often so this will probably go to the sample graveyard which is a box I keep stuff that I probably wont use. The shave cream by Kiehls features natural oils from squalene prep the skin with heavy lubrication, while the fatty acids from sesame seed oil protect the face and lock in moisture. Camphor and Menthol help post-shave healing by cooling skin and tightening pores. I guess the sample is decent and Kiehls products are ones that have a good reputation for nice ingredients. Value=1.60
The next item in the box is the Klorane Shampoo quinine and B vitamins. I like that Birchbox Man features products from brands that I have personally never heard off. The sample is 0.8 fl oz while the full size is 13.4 oz for $18. First thing is that the shampoo smells very herbaceous like tea or something. The shampoo is supposed to reinvigorate thinning hair by the use of quinine which encourages microcirculation in your scalp, leading to hair growth. Vitamin B complex activates the production of keratin, which protects and strengthens follicles. I do have thinning hair so the product is something I would like to try but when trying shampoo you need to use it a few times and this sample is not big enough to accomplish that. Value = 1.07 (or something around that)
4.Barking Irons Brando Tee
This was the lifestyle product included in this August BirchBox Man box. For a two pack of these the price is $46 which makes this $23 value. The Tee shirt is a plain Tee shirt in a dusty olive army green color.
The shirt is a 100% cotton made in the USA, featuring slightly shorter and angled sleeves reminiscent of old school T-shirts. Problem #1 is that the shirt is in an XL and while that is the size I selected in my BirchBox Man Profile (Because it was the biggest size option) I myself wear a XXL. Now it wouldn't be a huge deal if the shirt was actually an XL but it is cut very small and looks more like a smedium (small + medium). I don't believe the value is actually worth $23 its a plain Tee Shirt for $23 I want something that has some sort of graphic on it. The plainness aside the shirt is too small and Birchbox needs to have an option for us heftier men by allowing us to chose a XXL in our Profile. Value= $23
The overall value of this months box is around $27.37 do I think the box is actually worth that amount.........NO. Now the question is will I continue my subscription with BirchBox Man and my answer is Yes. Your probably confused at this point given the fact that this months review wasn't that stellar. I like the surprise of getting samples and new things to try every month plus even though the Tee shirt was a FAIL it was worth more than my previous boxes so I think BirchBox is getting better. This is just my own personal opinion other people might think this box is amazing.
Lets hope next month's box is amazeballs and we see more full size products and cool lifestyle items. My referral link is at the bottom if you want to get your own BirchBox Man.
